ADHD is a disorder that affects adults differently. Some of the symptoms include inattention which may be observed in form of poor concentration in tasks, often daydreaming, and poor adherence in completion of a particular project.

Other common symptoms include; fidgeting or moving a lot, the inability to sit still, or talking excessively. Impulsivity includes making many quick decisions, and waiting in queues. People with ADHD in adult phase might also deal with problems in organizing things, constantly being late and forgetting things.

Below we discuss the main symptoms of ADHD in adults.

Inattention

An aspect that is commonly associated with ADHD is inattention; this means adults with ADHD have difficulty in paying attention to various tasks or activities. This symptom can prove to be disabling and affect working and interpersonal relationships. Students may face difficulties in accomplishing their goals, obeying commands, or planning their actions.

Even the most basic of activities like reading, going to a meeting or having a conversation can turn into a chore. This constant distraction might result in more postponement, failure to meet deadlines, and poor performance even when adequate efforts have been made.

Hyperactivity

Inattention is a major characteristic of ADHD in children, but the symptom manifests in a different way in adults. Instead of movement, adults with ADHD may feel the inner agitation of the body; they may experience an urge to get up and walk around, constantly shifting in their seat, or have trouble staying still.

This can result in a constant state of feeling anxious or uneasy, especially when it is time to sit down for long. Adults may also exhibit hyperactivity in the following ways; talking excessively, interrupting others, feeling the need to take on multiple tasks without accomplishing any.

Impulsivity

Adulthood ADHD resultsin poor impulse control which affects the decision making ability and interactions with other people. This symptom makes the affected individuals take reckless decisions without much regard to the repercussions that come with such decisions.

Impulsivity has socially related symptoms regarding the interruption of other people’s conversation, speaking without thinking of the consequences of words, or getting impatient in various situations. This can result to strained relationships and unsuitable working conditions in professions where sensitive decision-making processes are important.

Emotional Dysregulation

A common, yet not very widely known symptom of ADHD in adults is emotional dysregulation. Such people are likely to display strong emotions towards mundane occurrences in their lives, for instance, rage, aggression, enthusiasm among others.

These changes in mood can be sudden and are often regarded as being irrational in response to the circumstances. Adults living with ADHD may also suffer from chronic stress and anxiety, and feel like they cannot cope with everyday tasks.

Conclusion

Knowledge about ADHD symptoms in adults is immensely significant when it comes to diagnosis and treatment. Lack of attention, motor over activity, impulsivity, and elevated emotional reactivity are the main symptoms that can significantly affect daily functioning.

Knowing about these symptoms may result in early treatment, support, and coping mechanisms to improve the lives of individuals with ADHD.
